Accommodation

The Awera Island Guesthouse consists of one large locally designed and built house. It has 3 main guest bedrooms with guests sleeping 2 per room; each room has good quality mattresses, linen, mosquito nets and fans. There is a kitchen, western style bathroom and an eating and lounge area. The front of the house has a veranda where you can enjoy a cold beer while you sit and watch the waves roll in. The house is staffed by a Western manager/surf guide, a local boat driver and a local cook.

Food & Drink

We serve a western breakfast of cereals, toast and fruit. The rest of the menu is a mix of western and local dishes with plenty of locally caught fish, chicken and salads. We cook the best possible dishes from the freshest ingredients available locally. There is also cold beer and soft drinks for sale at local prices.

Communication

Satellite internet is available at Awera for a small fee.

The island also has phone reception so set your roaming or grab a SIM card when you get to Padang and you will be able to stay in touch with friends and family.

Climate

The Mentawai Islands are located just one degree south of the equator; they experience a temperature of between 22 and 32 degrees Celsius every day of the year. Although it can be hot, it is usually a lot more pleasant than many people expect. The water temperature hovers around 28 degrees all year round.

The wet season occurs around November as the monsoons pass from the northern to the southern hemisphere. Even though this is the wettest time of year it can rain at any time.

The most consistent surf occurs during the southern winter from May through to September when huge Indian Ocean storms pump massive swells north to the Mentawai Islands.

October March and April while not quite as consistent can also receive good swells and can be a great time for those improving surfers who are not willing to risk life or limb or others that just want to stay away from the crowds.

Boats

We have 2 locally built longboats powered by 15 and 40 Hp Yamaha outboards. Our larger boat can comfortably fit 6 surfers and crew and will have you at any wave between the northern sides of Awera right down past Scarecrows to Seven Palm Point in around 30 minutes.

Tsunami

We have a hill behind our guesthouse and a clear track running to it. In the event of a large earth quake we can be on higher ground in less than 2 minutes. We hope we never need this hill but we do have a plan in place should the worst happen. We take the safety of our guests seriously.
